2025 Sheep Drive

On Sunday 28th September, three members of the Worshipful Company of Founders — Will Mathias, Harvey Pearce and Markus Nordberg — joined fellow Freemen in the annual Woolmen’s Company Sheep Drive across Southwark Bridge. This centuries-old privilege, once a practical right of Freemen to drive livestock toll-free into the City, is now a much-loved charitable event combining tradition, fellowship, and no small amount of spectacle.

Dressed in Founders Company hats, our Founders acquitted themselves admirably in their shepherding duties, even if the sheep occasionally seemed to have their own ideas about the route. The sight of Liverymen ushering their somewhat reluctant flocks across an iconic London landmark delighted the gathered crowds, who were treated to both history in action and moments of gentle comedy.

Beyond the pageantry, the event raised significant funds in support of the Woolmen’s charitable work, particularly in education and welfare. By taking part, our three representatives not only upheld a proud City tradition but also demonstrated the Founders’ ongoing commitment to the wider Livery movement.

It was, by all accounts, a day that blended dignity with amusement — a fitting reminder that City traditions can be both meaningful and thoroughly enjoyable.

There was, however, one unexpected addition to the Founders’ party. At just eight weeks old, Clementine Mathias was carried across the bridge — and, in so doing, is rumoured to have committed the first unlawful act of her young life, as infants are not yet entitled to the Freedom of the City. A minor transgression perhaps, but one warmly applauded by all who witnessed her debut.
