Christ’s Hospital School Livery Day

I had the privilege of attending a Livery Day at Christ’s Hospital at the invitation of the Treasurer (Chair of Governors) and the Headteacher.  The day showcased the pupils’ achievements, and we had the opportunity to tour the school in the company of senior students.  It was evident throughout that the school is an incredibly diverse community with many different nationalities working together in a very positive, even joyous, atmosphere.  Together with other members of the Livery we had long conversations with the senior students who told us of their backgrounds, often very challenging, and what the school had done for them and how it was in the process of changing their lives.  It was striking how many of them are engaged in serious charitable works, together with broad sporting and cultural activities.

We also had a chance to talk with senior staff on how pupils are chosen to attend the school.  The process of taking exams and then interviews followed by familiarisation weekends, allowed the pupils to experience the school before the commencement of their first term.  It was heartening to hear that very few students drop out.  Throughout the day members of the Livery questioned the senior staff and were given very clear answers.  The school has a clear ethos and seeks to implement its aims and objectives in a rigorous and thoughtful manner.  Pupils are admitted on academic scholarships and, in recent years, cultural and sporting.  The school’s academic performance is outstanding with 98% of leavers going on to top Universities.

Following the tour of the school we witnessed the lunch-hour band parade which was very impressive.  The day concluded with tea and questions with the Headmaster.

Founders’ Charities supported two pupils at Christ’s Hospital throughout their education there – both pupils leave the school this year.  The Brunel Fund has contributed £50K to the Lord Mayor’s Royal Mathematical Programme at Christ’s Hospital, an endowment which funds an RMS scholarship in perpetuity.
