As part of the London Festival of Architecture, this guided walk explores the layered history and evolving streetscape of Cloth Fair, one of the City’s most distinctive historic enclaves.
Beginning at the gatehouse of St Bartholomew the Great, participants will examine the exterior of the church and consider how later buildings have developed in close relationship to its medieval fabric. The walk continues along Cloth Fair to view Nos. 43 and 45a, now preserved as Landmark Trust properties, before contrasting these with the modern glass and steel intervention at 24 Middle Street. The route concludes with a close study of the exterior of Founders’ Hall, completed in 1987.
The walk is followed by a talk at Founders’ Hall (1 Cloth Fair), examining the evolution of the street itself, including shifts in its historic alignment, and offering further insight into the design and significance of Founders’ Hall within its context.
